Friday Tips: Be Sure to Make Your Links Clickable

Friday, April 29th, 2011

I’ve seen so many emails and blog posts recently with some version of “just go to this site: mysite.com”

But, it’s not a clickable link.

Which means anyone who really wants to go to the site must enter the url of the site into the nav bar on their browser. I know it only takes a minute, but it’s so easy to misspell a long or complicated url, or even a short one if someone is in a hurry or not paying attention.

(I just misspelled the url for this site as I was logging in to write more posts!)

So, always add the http:// before the site name.

Like http://1pb-5percentsolution.com

It’s a url that almost anyone, even me would get wrong. But, it’s a great product and can make your life easier and your business more profitable.

Quick Tip: Learn to Use More of the Programs You Have

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Most of us aren’t using as much of our software than we’d like, uncertain where to start or how to use it.

No, more! Watch the video so you can use the same strategy and tactics my sister used to teach her fourth graders how to use Microsoft Word. If they can do it, so can all us old fogeys…or not so old as the case may be.

I call this video the Fourth Grade Tutorial.

So, get started with your own Fourth Grade Tutorial today. It is amazing how much more I learn every time I do it.

And, don’t stop with Word or Pages. Go for PowerPoint or KeyNote. Then Excel or Numbers.

Just do it!

Friday Tips: Keep Connected with Colleagues

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

My coaching clients get often get my rant: join (and attend) your professional association.

The push back I get from them is usually: “Why join? I can’t get any business from my competitors.”

Of course you can! Many of you know when I returned to work after my last absence, virtually all my work for the first couple of years came from the network of colleagues who were members of my professional association. Either the work they knew of wasn’t right for them, didn’t fit their areas of expertise, wasn’t geographically close to the client or didn’t fit their schedule. I was grateful and they were confident I’d treat “their folks” right.

You do have to do your part: let your colleagues know Read More→

Quick Tip: Back up your Social Media

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

As a fairly new user of Facebook, just putting up my business page this week, I’ve been concerned about building a great following but not being able to access those contacts other than on Facebook.

Well, they must have heard me, or maybe it was all the others who had this same concern about losing social media contacts and contacts.

Leave it to Fast Company to keep us all posted. Check out this recent article about how to back up your various social media services.

Then go do it!

Friday Tips: Clean up Your Office

Friday, October 15th, 2010

It’s Friday: you know what that means.

Time to close the office and get ready for the weekend.

So, clean off your desk before finishing work for the week.

Transfer all the little notes, phone numbers, ideas and dates into your calendar, database or project files.

Then throw away the little pieces of paper.

Prepare invoices.

Return emails and phone calls.

Verify your appointments for next week.

Put the mail in the mail box.

Gather up all the dishes, clothes, your children’s toys (and your own!), turn out the lights, close the door.

Don’t come back until Monday.
