Great Ideas for Getting Your Content Seen on Facebook

Saturday, February 26th, 2011

If you are using Facebook for fun or for promoting your business, Ellied Mirman at HubSpot Blog has 20 great tips for for getting your content seen on Facebook.

Here is the paragraph that really caught my eye:

The news feed is the #1 most visible real estate on Facebook. It is customized to each user based on their network and their patterns of activity, like which of their friends they interact with the most. The news feed shows the top posts from a user’s network, filtering out more than 99% of content. So, the question is, how do you make sure your content makes it into that <1% of content securing real estate in the news feed?

If this isn’t an eye opener, I don’t know what is.

Most of us post on our wall, on other people’s walls with the expectation that the whole world will be able to see our pearls of wisdom.

Not so much.

Do yourself a favor and read this post before you post on your own wall or on another’s wall.

It is appalling to me to hear of (or get posts on my walls) from so many people who are airing their family dirty laundry, photos that remind me I really am an old fogey or unbelievable nasty attacks on perfect strangers.

My first reaction is some version of “his mama isn’t finished with him” as I delete the entry. (And sometimes the “friend” if they don’t shape up.)

My rule of thumb is this: Anything I wouldn’t be comfortable with appearing on the front cover of the New York Times (okay, soon to be web page),

found in a Google search and/or

proud to have my parents to read/see

simply does not get shared.

Period.

I just wish others would follow the same guidelines.

Thank you for putting up with my rant. It just sort of boiled over this week.

Quick Tip: Back up your Social Media

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

As a fairly new user of Facebook, just putting up my business page this week, I’ve been concerned about building a great following but not being able to access those contacts other than on Facebook.

Well, they must have heard me, or maybe it was all the others who had this same concern about losing social media contacts and contacts.

Leave it to Fast Company to keep us all posted. Check out this recent article about how to back up your various social media services.

Then go do it!

Friday Tips: Facebook Security

Friday, October 8th, 2010

Lots of us are using Facebook to connect with friends and family and to help market our businesses. For us “mature” users it can be a challenge. We’re digital immigrants not digital natives like our kids and grandkids.

Especially when it comes to social media, what to do, what not to do, how to make it work for you, and most importantly, not hurt you or your business.

Particularly by being able to choose what to make private and what to leave public.

Leave it up to a college student to clearly explain how to protect your privacy on Facebook, complete with screen shot and text. One of our readers, and a dear colleague, John Aberle  from HelpCustomersBuy.com posted a link to his son Ian’s article on the SMU website.

Read it and make the changes. You owe it to yourself, your clients and customers and your “real” friends.
